Question: Thinking about getting both of my kids evaluated for speech. What do I need to do to have to do to get the ball rolling?
Answer: Young children, (0-3 years) are evaluated by the state through the early intervention program. Children over 3 years (or a little younger) need to be evaluated through the school district. We can give you the info for early intervention. Your school district will give you the protocol they use.
Come in to us first to review your concerns. Firstly, we may be able to reassure you that your child is developing well within normal limits. Secondly, it often pays to wait until a certain age to get the evaluation, as the parameters change. For instance, you are much less likely to qualify for services for speech delay at 23 months, than 24 months.
